In order to avoid spoiling the film I won't be mentioning any specifics I'll try and talk about the general experience.
I haven't been to a film for so long that the people around me are so obviously gee'd up about. Here and there people were wearing superman or super hero garb it really was a great atmosphere. Whilst on business down in London I managed to catch the first two Reeves films on SKY. I am glad I did as they reminded me of the benchmark that had been set and refreshed what the fully grown Superman was like (vs Smallville). Superman (and his world) as concept shouldn't work, he's too powerful, too American, too cheerful and too beautiful for today's celebration of ugliness media. However Superman Returns reminds us that he isn't indestructible, he is for everyone, we need hope and we need beauty. BTW when I say beauty I don't mean it in a gay overtone (as I am male), but in the beauty of the heart. Sure he must get a kick over the cheering on when he saves the day, but at least he did something for the attention (I'm looking at you reality TV). Sod gritty 'urbanism' I want hope once in a while.
