Entering the dehomogenised age of video games
2 Feb 2011
Back in the day (like many early medias) video game platforms and content were extremely local. My UK background of the 80-90s is very different than those of my US friends and very different to those of Japan.
The ZX Spectrum didn’t happen in America, the early PC gaming days didn’t happen in Japan. Around 1990 this slowly started changing. We ended up with Japanese Consoles and American PCs. The market massively combined and standardised on a few key platforms.

2011 Predictions: New Nintendo Console
5 Jan 2011
Nintendo has had great success with both the Wii and the DS. However the numbers don’t lie. The DS has hit saturation in Japan and the Wii’s star is on the wain. Everyone that wanted either of these consoles has bought one.
Back when the DS and Wii launched Nintendo was in the worst position has been in a LONG time. The Gameboy Advance was looking awfully underpowered compared to Sony’s rumoured PSP and the GameCube just failed to be mainstream in any sense.

Star Trek: The Reboot
14 Dec 2010
I have made no efforts to hide my disappointment after seeing the Star Trek reboot at the cinema. I really didn’t like it. However in an effort to be fair after my recent revisit of the other films I sat down and watched it again.
Taken as entertainment it is ok. I found it to be a bit like an American kid’s cartoon or Transformers 2, frenetic and a bit much.

Star Trek Films Retrospective
26 Nov 2010
Film Four recently showed the entire run of original Star Trek films. That is to say the original universe, not the reboot by JJA. I’d like to give my thoughts on them, please bare in mind I am not a Trekker/Trekkie or a critic.
Star Trek: The Motion Picture
Often jokingly called The Slow-Motion Picture, this is a somewhat successful attempt at taking Trek to a higher brow. I like TMP, it is flaws are balanced out by its audacity.

CS4 user in an Elements world
5 Nov 2010
I recently bought Adobe Photoshop Elements 9. It’s a new release, I previously have used Version 6 (free with my laptop) and before that Version 3 (way back when). I had considered Elements to be just too reduced. Adobe’s pruning was just too harsh for my liking. PSE9 has crossed the boundary for me. I am a long, long time user of Photoshop. I started on Version 3 on System 7 for the Mac at College in the late 90s.

Would you miss it if this blog was gone?

Should I keep this blog any longer? thats the question.
Would you really miss it if it was gone and a static site was in it’s place?

Getting more out of what you have: K800i
10 Feb 2010
The photo opposite is a photo I took with my little old Sony Ericsson K800i. It has been a good wee phone, but the shutter button has failed. This ment no more photos and no more video either.
The internet was also pretty ropey and not really useful.
However this all changed when I whacked Opera Mini 5 on it and boom! the internet just worked. I then found that the joystick button replicates the shutter button and boom!
